Mayfest Quick-Draw Event

May 26, in Red River! Artists, challenge yourselves to create in a short time frame, and be amazed! Cash prizes & art show reception.

Attention northern New Mexico artists and painters! If you are filling up your calendars with fun art events, don’t miss this special collaborative Quick-Draw event, held in Red River, NM. Get ready to leave the four walls of your studio and come paint “en plein air!”

There will be prizes awarded and sales to be made at the reception. Area youth are also invited to participate and will be given free painting supplies.

Register between 8 and 9 am at the gazebo in Brandenburg Park, get your canvases stamped, and find your special place to go paint & draw! By 3 pm, move to the location of the reception, down the street.

Meet at the gazebo at Brandenburg Park in front of the Red River Visitors & Conference Center, in Red River, on State Hwy 38.

8 – 9 am
Artist check-in & registration.  Size is restricted to 16 x 20″ canvases. Receive a mini-canvas that will help fundraise for the QCC, too. Get your materials and hop on one of the free buses that are running around Red River all day between the three parks and the on-demand bus can take artists further afield. Or take off on your own, to historic Questa or lakes or meadows, just be back by 3 pm! The registration packet will have suggestions for where to go. 

3 pm
Art is brought to The Vine restaurant, 601 W. Main Street (formerly T-Bucks), by 3:15. Artists will attach their labels with titles, medium, and asking prices on the back of the canvas. Staff will place artwork on easels or walls and assign #s to them. Staff will count art and match registrants with their art to make sure we have everyone’s entries. Make sure you do NOT sign the artwork at this point. Artists will leave the building by 3:30.

Judges will deliberate and determine awards between 3:30 and 4 pm. Staff will take labels off the hidden location and affix to the wall adjacent to where the art is hanging.

  • Adults: 1st place $200, 2nd $100
  • Youth: 1st $100, 2nd $75
  • People’s Choice $100

4 pm
Art is on display to the public, who can vote for People’s Choice award, citing the #s we have assigned and affixed. Visitors will need to be reminded to vote and hand in their ballots! Artists also welcome to come back in and enjoy the reception!

Drinks, finger food, and live music will help us celebrate. Staff will tally People’s Choice award ballots. Announcement of prizes and awards by 5:30 pm. Art is for sale during reception, with checks or cash as accepted payment. Commissions as stated below.

ELIGIBILITY

Adults, and youth (8 yrs to 17 yrs, under age 14 needs adult chaperone.)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • NO entry fee!
  • Each artist can enter a painting or drawing no larger than 16″ x 20”
  • All painting surfaces must be stamped on the back by QCC representative upon check-in.
  • All entries must be completed en plein air, between 8 am to 3 pm on Sunday, May 26. DO NOT SIGN the art until after the judging!
  • Artwork must be framed with wire hangers or be gallery-wrapped canvas with painted sides and wire hangers in order to be displayed for prizes and reception sales. 

* Participants in the Youth Division will be given an 8 x 10” canvas, acrylic paint set, and brushes (bring water and container, paper towels, plastic plate for mixing). For Youth Division, unframed artwork will be accepted at the reception.

The first 30 adult registrants will be given a 6 x 8” mini-canvas and frame to complete during the Quick-Draw.  This will be encouraged as a fundraiser for the event host; the non-profit Questa Creative Council (50% proceeds for the artist!). 

ARTWORK DELIVERY & SALES

Artists must deliver their work (both large & mini canvases) to The Vine restaurant in Red River by 3 pm. The work should be UNSIGNED at this point. There is no minimum price for the artwork. – The Questa Creative Council will keep a 30% commission. (The commission on the mini-paintings will be 50%) – Opening Reception and viewing will begin at 4 pm, with awards announced shortly thereafter. – Reception with food, drink, and live music, and sales will run until 6 pm. Checks or cash accepted. Sold artwork will remain displayed until then and must be collected upon closing.

*The QCC will handle all sales and collect all payments from the customers. Checks will be mailed to artists within three weeks. – Artists will be responsible for paying state sales tax, which should be considered in their pricing. 

AGREEMENT OF ENTRY and LIABILITY

  • Questa Creative Council employees and volunteers, or anyone working on the event will not be held responsible for any loss or damage to artwork.  
  • Your participation constitutes acceptance of all terms and conditions mentioned in this document.
  • Your sign-in upon registration included release of liability and permission to use your image if taken during event.
